Grand Central Oyster Bar Postpones Reopening Until Week of September 20.

New York, September 3-Due to unforeseen operational issues, and delays caused by Hurricane Ida, the re-opening of the Grand Central Oyster Bar has been postponed two weeks until the week of September 20.

The latest delay is not COVID-related.

The return of the 108-year old historic seafood restaurant in Grand Central Terminal was originally scheduled for September 7, after a near-17 month shutdown caused by the COVID 19 pandemic.

“We feel terribly for all of our employees who have been working so hard to get ready to reopen, and for all of our patrons,”

“It’s very disappointing for everyone, but we’ll continue to persevere.”
— President Janet Poccia, Executive Chef Sandy Ingber, and Vice President Mohammed Lawal in a joint statement.

What we’d originally planned to announce..

chin up buttercup… just two more long, painful, weeks…

The iconic subterranean restaurant inside Grand Central Open is scheduled to reopen on September 7th after a year-long closure!

"It has been almost a year and a half of challenging times for the Grand Central Oyster Bar," says president Janet Poccia, executive chef Sandy Ingber, and vice president Mohammed Lawal in a statement. "We relish the opportunity to be of service again, and fill our customers' hearts, and ours, with joy, and do what we do best — offer an amazing experience to our beloved New Yorkers and to our friends from all over the world. We hope to come back stronger than ever, and with an even bigger desire to serve you."

The restaurant was first opened in 1913 and had closed during the early days of the pandemic and reopened on September 30th, 2020 when indoor dining at 25% had resumed, giving them 75 seats to work with. However, the restaurant doesn't have outdoor dining as it's situated underground. It closed its doors on October 9th, 2020, due to a lack of business and foot traffic coming into Grand Central.

The restaurant will operate at 100% capacity including the bar and counter, from Monday through to Friday with COVID safety measures in place. On the plus side, there will be extra spaces between tables, and employees will be regularly tested. They will also be offering to-go meals for pick up and delivery within a five-block radius. The restaurant will also require staff and patrons to show proof of vaccination and guests are asked to wear masks when they are not eating or drinking.
