President Biden and The Case For Gadget Repairs

President Biden wants to make it EASIER for you to get your SMARTPHONE fixed!

Tech has been a huge part of our daily routine during the pandemic. Basically, anything with a chip in it now is highly unusual, difficult, and too rare to even source or find someone able to help fix these devices, besides the manufacturer that is.

President Biden is on board! Earlier this month, he issued an executive order calling on the Federal Trade Commission to write regulations forcing manufacturers to change their policies and allow what consumer groups call the "right to repair."
Other consumer organizations, like the U.S. Public Interest Research Groups, are also behind the effort as well. Nathan Proctor, U.S. PIRG's right to repair campaign director, won't make spare parts and critical information available to consumers and repair shops.

They use software locking so that they lock out repairs with software —

They won’t let you access diagnostic features, which the right-to-repair movement is seeking.

Thanks, JaBiden!

President Biden’s executive order calls for new policies around device repair and how much control manufacturers have over consumers' choices.

For example, "Apple and the big guys" don't want to give up the repair business because people go there instead of repairing the phone, they sell them a new one and say, ‘oh, you should upgrade instead of fixing it for X amount of dollars.’

As consumers, I believe we should have more choices and the freedom to DIY repairs at home when we have the tools, skills, and parts to do so. Or, better yet, give small businesses our repair dollars and support local, for a true greater good solution.

Another step in the right direction is to enforce laws such as prohibiting manufacturers from threatening to void a device's warranty if it is taken to an independent repair shop.
